Spain housing decrees: PP demands election if they fail

Madrid, Spain: two housing decrees face a vote in the Congress of Deputies on Friday, 2 October, and the opposition People’s Party (PP) wants a general election if they fail. Its parliamentary spokeswoman, Ester Muñoz, says Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez should call one if he cannot win the vote. She sees it as a test of confidence in his government.

Muñoz expects Junts to vote against the decrees. Backing them would go against the interests of its voters, she told Telecinco. She also says parliament approved housing measures by a large absolute majority on 10 September, but the government ignored them and brought forward decrees that point in the opposite direction.

The PP will not try to force Sánchez out through a no-confidence vote, Muñoz says, because it lacks the votes to win one. She argues that the decrees deal with rents but contain no measures to increase the supply of homes. The PP, she says, will keep putting forward its own housing proposals.

Reports have raised the possibility of an election in late November. Muñoz suggests such talk can come from government leaks intended to fuel debate about whether Sánchez will call a vote. For now, the immediate decision is parliament’s: whether to pass the two decrees.
