Spain’s housing decrees: five million await Friday vote

Five million people could benefit from two housing decrees: in Madrid, Spain, Sumar is pressing MPs to back both texts when Congress votes on Friday. Sumar’s parliamentary spokeswoman, Verónica Martínez Barbero, made the appeal on Wednesday, urging the government’s allies — especially parties on the left — to support the measures.

Sumar wanted the housing measures in one decree, but Barbero said their content mattered more than how they were divided. She said her party had been pressing its coalition partner, the Socialist Party (PSOE), since July for measures including longer rental contracts and protection against evictions. She said the People’s Party (PP) and Vox planned to vote against the decrees.

Compromís will support both texts, despite its reservations. Its housing spokesman, Alberto Ibáñez, said they moved policy in the right direction but fell short on one proposed restriction: a ban on home purchases by investment funds dubbed “vulture funds” would apply only when the price was below 70% of the valuation. Compromís wanted a complete ban.

Águeda Micó of Compromís also criticised the decision to split the measures into two decrees. She wants both approved on Friday, then further action on housing.
