Mallorca housing row: two decrees fail, PSIB blames Prohens
Mallorca’s housing row sharpens on 2 October: Spain’s Congress rejects two housing decrees, and PSIB politician Rosario Sánchez blames Balearic president Marga Prohens for what she calls a “dramatic” situation across the islands.
In a statement, Sánchez points to votes against the decrees from the People’s Party (PP), Vox and Junts. The PSIB deputy leader says Prohens is doing nothing to tackle the housing problem and is blocking action by others. She describes the Balearic Islands as facing an “absolute housing emergency”, citing evictions and what she says are Spain’s highest home prices.
Sánchez says the rejected measures would have given small property owners tax breaks and greater certainty that they could get their homes back for relatives. She also accuses the PP and Vox of leaving investment funds free to use homes for holiday lets, warning that families could lose their homes as companies seek more profit.
Sánchez says she will keep working to make it possible for people to continue living in the Balearic Islands.
