Menorca housing crisis: PSOE urges MPs to back two decrees

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

For many people on Menorca in the Balearic Islands, a decent home is almost impossible to find, says local Socialist Party (PSOE) leader Pepe Mercadal. He is urging every Balearic MP, including those from the People’s Party (PP), to back two housing decrees when Spain’s Congress of Deputies votes on Friday.

Mercadal singles out three proposals: value added tax on holiday lets, incentives for small landlords who offer homes at affordable rents, and tax breaks for building protected housing or homes for affordable rent. He says the measures could help families and workers on Menorca who struggle to find a home. Friday’s vote will decide whether the decrees pass.
