Mallorca: Balearic PP brands housing decrees a stunt

In Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday, 29 September, the Balearic People’s Party attacks two new Spanish housing decrees as a political stunt. Pedro Sánchez’s government approved them at a cabinet meeting that day. The proposals include extending protection against eviction until 2030 and adding two years to current rental contracts due to end before 31 December 2028.

Speaking at the Balearic parliament, party spokesman Sebastià Sagreras says he needs more time to study the texts. But he already believes one decree will fail to win enough support. The other, he says, could still be negotiated in Congress. He calls the government’s approach frivolous, arguing that housing problems cannot be fixed with one or two decrees after so many years in power.

The decrees also cover seasonal lets and room rentals. They would ban property purchases by so-called “vulture funds” until 2028. Whether either decree wins the support it needs remains unresolved.
