Mallorca rent row: PP and Vox warn of fewer rentals
In Palma, Mallorca, PP and Vox warn that two new Spanish housing decrees will leave fewer homes to rent. Ministers approved the measures on Tuesday. Speaking on Wednesday, the parties called them “confiscatory” and “communist”.
PP spokesman Sebastià Sagreras said the housing problem could not be fixed with one decree or two. After a meeting of parliamentary spokespeople, he accused the central government of putting forward a less ambitious decree it hoped would pass alongside a broader one that might fail. He said the approach was meant to keep its parliamentary allies happy.
Vox’s parliamentary spokeswoman, Manuela Cañadas, said the decrees would mean more government intervention, less legal certainty and attacks on private property. She also blamed the central government for a rise in evictions over the past eight years, and linked higher house prices to Spain’s population growth.
