Spain housing decrees: PP says no to rent extensions
Spain’s housing decrees face a Friday vote: Alberto Núñez Feijóo says his People’s Party (PP) will vote against them, accusing Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of misleading the public over rental contracts. Speaking in the corridors of Spain’s Congress in Madrid on 30 September 2026, the opposition leader said the two decrees contradict each other. Congress is due to vote on whether to ratify them on Friday.
Two different rent rules
Feijóo said one decree would require rental contracts to be extended until 2028, while the other would extend them indefinitely. He also complained that the full text of one decree was still unknown. These are Feijóo’s objections; the outcome of the vote remains open.
Asked whether the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and Junts might support the measures, Feijóo said they would have to explain that decision themselves.
The PP’s alternative
Feijóo criticised the decrees for making no provision for building more homes. Without more housing, he argued, people would struggle to rent or buy.
The PP wants to build one million homes. Feijóo also proposed cutting taxes for young people by 60% and offering a 100% public guarantee to help them buy a home. For now, the next step is Friday’s vote in Congress.
