In Palma, Mallorca, Balearic Islands president Marga Prohens welcomes Congress’s rejection of Spain’s housing decrees: she says the measures have already driven some small landlords to withdraw homes from the market. In a social media post on Friday, 2 October, she said families and young people who need rentals were being left without them, according to Europa Press.

Prohens blames the Spanish government for putting the burden of its failure to act on small landlords. She accuses the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) and the far left of acting irresponsibly over the decrees, which the Council of Ministers had approved before Congress rejected them.

She wants to close the gap between housing supply and demand by giving small landlords more security, cutting red tape, speeding up procedures and lowering taxes. Affordable homes should be for people who live here, she says, rather than adding to demand by attracting more people from outside.
