Two housing decrees already in force could fall in Spain’s Congress in Madrid on Friday, 2 October: Junts per Catalunya says it will vote against both. The chamber is due to begin debating them at 11.00, with a separate vote on each.

Junts wants the government to withdraw the decrees and write a new text. It warns that some measures could leave fewer homes available to rent, push up prices and make it harder for people on low incomes to find a home. The People’s Party (PP) and Vox also oppose the decrees, making their defeat likely. The government is pressing ahead with the votes.

The cabinet approved both decrees on Tuesday, and they took effect after publication in Spain’s Official State Gazette. Congress must approve them within 30 days or they will lapse. The government asked for an urgent vote rather than waiting for a regular sitting.

People camping in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol say they will go to Congress on Friday to protest as the votes take place.
