Mallorca union warns housing decree may fail Friday vote

On Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, one of Spain’s two new housing decrees could be voted down on Friday, union leader Pedro Homar warns. The head of UGT in the Balearic Islands raises the concern in Palma on Tuesday, after the Spanish government presents its housing measures in two separate texts. Congress will vote on whether to ratify them at a sitting devoted to housing.

Homar fears the split may signal that one decree lacks the support to pass. He urges political parties to act responsibly. He also welcomes the social protests that, in his view, pushed the government to hold an urgent meeting on the measures.

For Homar, the stakes are clear in the case of Mari Carmen, who is 87 and has a physical disability. He says current housing rules could force her from her home and familiar surroundings while allowing an investment fund to put its interests ahead of her dignity and stability.

UGT backs the Sindicato de Inquilinas, a tenants’ union. Homar says they want rules that help working people and curb investment funds that the union blames for driving up property prices. Congress votes on the decrees on Friday.
