Mallorca housing in focus as seven parties join forces

Housing on Mallorca is one of three issues driving a new seven-party coalition’s campaign for seats in Spain’s Congress of Deputies. Ara Més-Front Ampli also plans to focus on the effects of island life and protecting the territory. Ara Més spokesperson Carme Gomila presented the coalition on Monday, 19 October, at the MÉS per Mallorca headquarters in Palma, Mallorca.

The parties are MÉS per Mallorca, Més per Menorca, Ara Eivissa, Esquerra Unida, Sumar, Recortes Cero and Progreso en Verde. Gomila said people wanted solutions, not more talk about disputes between parties. She said the islands needed their own voice in Madrid if the coalition won seats.

The parties have agreed how to divide places on their candidate list, but not who will lead it. That candidate will come from one of Ara Més’s three member parties, with the federation’s Federal Council making the final decision. The list must be prepared this week, ahead of next Monday’s deadline to submit it to the electoral board.

Podemos is not part of the coalition. Its spokesperson, Pablo Fernández, said on Monday that it would put forward its own lists and ruled out its members joining as independents. Gomila said Ara Més would still explore ways to work with the party.
