Spain housing row: minister says Feijóo is lying

Spain’s housing minister accuses opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo of lying over housing figures: Isabel Rodríguez challenges his claims about protected homes and prices in social media posts on Friday. The dispute centres on whether Feijóo’s People’s Party builds more protected homes and whether prices are rising fastest in Catalonia.

Rodríguez says 47 in every 100 protected homes built in Spain in the first quarter of this year were in Catalonia. She also cites 3,006 protected homes built in the Madrid region, which is governed by the People’s Party.

Catalonia does not lead price rises either, she argues. Figures she published put increases at around 15% in Aragón and Castile and León, 14% in Murcia, 13% in Galicia and Madrid, and 12% in Andalusia. Catalonia’s figure is 10%.

Rodríguez also rejects the People’s Party’s claim that rent controls do not work. In parts of Catalonia where housing is under pressure, she says prices on new rental contracts have fallen by 1.3% without a drop in the number of homes available to rent. She says Feijóo offers only “cuts and speculation” and questions how he would deliver the million homes he has promised.
