Mallorca housing crisis: STEI joins general strike

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

On Mallorca, some people with jobs still cannot afford a decent home: the STEI union is joining a general strike on 11 November to demand a change in housing policy across the Balearic Islands. It will take part alongside the Intersindical Confederation, of which it is a member.

STEI says workers are having to spend an ever larger share of their pay on rent. Pensioners are struggling too, it says, as their incomes fail to keep up with housing costs and the wider cost of living. The union argues that the Balearic Islands’ heavy reliance on tourism has helped push up home prices and driven people from their neighbourhoods.

The union wants rents regulated, more public housing and an alternative home for anyone facing eviction. It is also calling for an urgent change to the islands’ economic model. Ahead of the general election on 29 November, STEI is urging political parties to commit to improving working people’s living conditions.
