Housing worries in Spain: 40% of families see getting a home as a health problem, Health Minister Mónica García says in Madrid, Spain, on 15 October. She warns that uncertainty over where to live can bring anxiety, insomnia and depression. She was speaking at a health event organised by the news website elDiario.es.

García says health depends on more than medical care. Living conditions, finances and access to public services matter too. She contrasts the protection offered by public healthcare with the cost of securing a home, which she says can leave people in financial ruin. She calls for housing, education and support for people who need care to be protected alongside healthcare.

The health system itself must change, García says. As people live longer and medicine advances, she wants care that supports them throughout their lives, not just when they fall acutely ill. She says the system has expanded its services during the current parliamentary term, but the work is not finished.
