Mallorca housing protest: group camps overnight in Palma

Mallorca housing protesters have spent the night camped in Plaza de España in Palma, Mallorca: they want Spain’s Council of Ministers to extend tenancies indefinitely and ban evictions when it meets on Tuesday. The group stayed after Monday’s housing rally. The rally is part of protests across Spain that began after the eviction of an elderly woman named Maricarmen last Wednesday.

The protesters are calling for the full ‘Maricarmen decree’. Óscar Martínez, a spokesman for the Sindicat de Llogateres de Mallorca tenants’ union, says the Spanish government “cannot fail” and must not put forward a watered-down version.

Martínez also wants a freeze on rent increases and a change to the law to stop what he calls the “fraudulent use” of temporary and room-rental contracts. If Tuesday’s meeting falls short, he says the union will keep fighting for a change to a housing model he says benefits a few at the expense of many.
