Mallorca’s housing protest camp at Plaza España in Palma is gone: a Senate election alliance condemns its removal and calls for tighter rules on holiday lets. On Thursday, 5 November, Acord de Progrés per Mallorca candidates Rosa Cursach and Francisco González said Palma City Council’s action breached the rights to assemble and demonstrate. They spoke as the alliance set out its plans for the 29 November general election.

The alliance brings together PSIB, MÉS per Mallorca and Frente Amplio. It wants action in the housing market to stop the spread of flats rented to tourists.

González says rising housing and food costs are pushing people in the Balearic Islands to move to mainland Spain. He proposes a limit on tourist arrivals and rules for holiday rentals.

Cursach set out the alliance’s other aims: protecting the right to use Catalan in Mallorca’s schools, healthcare and public institutions, defending people against discrimination, and keeping abortion available through public healthcare regardless of income.
