Mallorca housing protest: Palma wants tents gone

Palma, Mallorca: a housing protest camp occupies Plaza de España, where the city council says 50,000 people pass through each day. On Thursday, 1 October, Palma City Council calls on the Spanish government’s delegation in the Balearic Islands to act immediately to end the camp. The council says the period the organisers gave the delegation for their protest appears to have expired.

The tents stop council workers carrying out routine cleaning and maintenance, the council says. It also says other people cannot use the square as usual.

Flags and other items hang from the statue of Rei en Jaume. The council says putting them there would have required climbing to the monument’s base, risking injury and damage to the statue.

The council says it respects the right to protest and gather, but argues that the camp cannot take over public space in breach of the rules. It wants those camping to leave, remove their tents, furniture and other belongings, and leave the square in good condition. It is pressing the government delegation to intervene without delay.
