Mallorca housing protest: Palma pushes to clear camp

Palma wants a housing protest camp cleared from Plaza de España in Palma, Mallorca, but the Spanish government’s delegation in the Balearic Islands refuses. On Friday, 2 October, mayor Jaime Martínez calls for more cooperation over the tents, which are part of a protest for the right to housing. The city asked for the camp to be removed on Wednesday; the delegation says it disrupts neither public order nor public services.

Martínez disagrees. He says city staff cannot work in the square and points to cleaning crews unable to do their job while the area is occupied. He argues that safety problems should be prevented, but identifies no other problem caused by the campers.

The mayor says Palma must keep public services running, though he insists responsibility for the camp does not lie with the city. He considers its request to the delegation sufficient. The delegation has not agreed to remove the camp.
