Palma housing protest mourns Maricarmen after eviction
Palma, Mallorca: dozens of housing protesters gather in Plaza de España on 8 October to honour Maricarmen, an elderly woman who died without returning to her Madrid home after being evicted. They hold a minute’s silence. Their banner calls for collective action against property-related violence.
Protesters blame an investment fund
In a statement, the protesters express grief and anger. They accuse a property investment fund of causing Maricarmen’s death and say the Spanish government and the regional government of Madrid contributed to it. They also condemn what they describe as a media campaign against her. The gathering honours others the protesters call “martyrs of the housing war”.
Camp plans to stay
Camp spokesperson Lluc Cifre says the protest has no end date. The group wants effective solutions to the housing crisis and does not plan to leave without them. Protesters are also urging people to join a general strike on 11 November, which they hope will continue indefinitely.
