Mallorca housing protest: 100 seek price limits

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Around 100 people protest outside the Balearic Parliament in Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday, 6 October, calling for action on housing costs. They want the Balearic Islands officially classed as an area under housing pressure, a measure lawmakers debate and vote on inside at the request of the PSIB. CCOO and UGT called the protest; demonstrators carry whistles, horns, union flags and Palestinian flags.

Pay rises swallowed by housing costs

José Luis García, the head of CCOO in the Balearic Islands, says wages are not enough to cover a mortgage. Pay has risen, he says, but higher housing costs have swallowed the increase. He calls for limits on housing prices.

María José Cordero, UGT’s secretary for equality and social policy in the Balearic Islands, says an average wage is not enough for one person to rent a home or pay a mortgage. It takes two wages, she says, and the cost of housing stops young people moving out of their family homes.

General strike planned for November

Cordero announces a general strike for the first week of November to demand the right to decent housing. She calls on unions, the public and organisations to join it.
