Mallorca housing protest: 3,000 march through Palma

On Mallorca, around 3,000 people march through Palma on Saturday, 3 October, demanding the right to housing, according to the Spanish National Police. Organisers put the number at 10,000. The march sets off shortly before 12.30 pm from Plaza de España, where a housing protest camp remains in place.

The Sindicat de Llogateres de Mallorca tenants’ union, the Sindicat d’Habitatge de Palma housing union and PAH Mallorca, a group representing people affected by mortgages, called the protest. Marchers carry signs calling for decent housing and an end to evictions.

Anger over housing policy

The march comes a day after Spain’s Congress rejects two decrees approved by the government. Protesters criticise PP, Vox and Junts for voting against them. Outside the Spanish government’s delegation in Palma, they also shout “Shame” at the government over its housing policy.

The organisers want lower rents, an end to evictions, more good-quality public housing and a ban on selling multiple homes to the same buyer. Óscar Martínez of the tenants’ union says a lack of political will is the real problem. Miquel Durán of the Palma housing union says the measures put forward so far are not enough.

Call for a general strike

At the end of the march, the organisers call for a general strike over housing, but give no date. They say they intend to keep pressing for change after housing protests across the country this week.
