Mallorca housing protest: renters to bang pots in Palma

Mallorca’s renters’ union is calling for a pots-and-pans protest at Palma’s Plaza de Cort on Thursday: it wants Spain’s Congress of Deputies to approve two housing decrees. The Sindicat de Llogateres de Mallorca is also planning a march on Saturday with the Sindicat d'Habitatge de Palma and PAH to call for a general strike over housing.

Thursday’s protest is part of a nationwide action outside town halls called by the Confederation of Tenants’ Unions. The Mallorca union says street protests have pushed the government to adopt almost all the housing measures it sought. But it argues that splitting them into two decrees makes it easier for MPs to reject automatic tenancy renewals.

The union acknowledges that emergency decrees cannot undo decades of housing policy. It is pressing for both decrees to pass in parliament, while demonstrations planned across Spain this weekend, including in Palma, keep up the call for a housing strike.
