Palma housing protest returns to square after eviction

In Palma, Mallorca, housing protesters plan a shared meal in Plaza de España at 19.00 on Friday, 6 November, after returning to the square following an eviction. They announced the gathering on social media as a protest against repression and speculation. A group spent Thursday night on the square without tents, a day after Palma City Council ordered their camp cleared.

Rain moves the meeting

The protesters returned to the square at about 19.00 on Thursday, but heavy rain drove their meeting under the arches of the Olivar market. They discussed the general strike planned for 11 November, then went back to Plaza de España to finish the meeting and read a statement.

They shared a meal and tried to sleep on the square while several police patrols were there.

A dispute over sitting down

According to the protesters, officers told them they had to remain standing to be protected by the right to assemble. They say they were told they could not sit or lie on the ground. The group sees this as further pressure from the council and maintains that its protest is covered by the right to assemble.

The protesters say the new camp has no boundary or barriers because the council removed the pallets that had marked out their area the previous day. Their next planned gathering is Friday’s shared meal.
