Mallorca housing protest after two decrees rejected
In Palma, Mallorca, housing groups plan a protest at Plaza de España for 12.00 on Saturday, 3 October, after Congress rejects two government housing decrees. The Sindicat de Llogateres de Mallorca, Sindicat d'Habitatge de Palma and Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca are organising the demonstration. Congress rejected the decrees the previous day.
The organisers see the march as a step towards a general strike. The Mallorca tenants' union says its protests will continue despite the vote. It wants open-ended tenancy agreements, lower rents, the expropriation of so-called vulture funds and an end to evictions. It has asked trade unions, works councils, neighbourhood associations, educational institutions, university groups and the wider public to take part.
Palma is one of more than 50 cities across Spain where protests are planned this weekend, following a call from the Confederación de Sindicatos de Inquilinas.
