Mallorca housing protests spark row over rent limits

Housing protest camps enter the debate in Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday, 29 September, as Balearic president Marga Prohens faces questions in parliament about rents. She says she is not surprised that protesters describe a progressive government as hypocritical and too close to people who profit from rent. Prohens is repeating their criticism, not directing it at the protesters.

Vox representative Manuela Cañadas argues that extending rental contracts and restricting the market will leave fewer homes available to rent. Prohens also blames a law passed under Felipe González’s Socialist government for the eviction of Maricarmen in Madrid.

The Socialists’ Iago Negueruela says Prohens has refused to designate areas of the Balearic Islands where rents could be limited. Prohens dismisses his party’s proposals as failed ideas and accuses the Socialists of exploiting Maricarmen’s case for political ends. Lluís Apesteguia of MÉS per Mallorca urges her to intervene in a housing market he calls “out of control”.
