Spain housing poll: 68.4% say right is only for some

In Spain, 68.4% of people surveyed say access to decent housing is guaranteed only for some. Another 18.2% say no one has that guarantee, while just 11.9% believe everyone does. The Centre for Sociological Research (CIS) released the survey on Wednesday, 30 September, after interviewing 6,040 people from 10 to 17 September.

The outlook is bleak too: 65.9% expect the housing problem to worsen within a year. The interviews took place before the eviction of Maricarmen Abascal, which added momentum to protests over the housing crisis.

People see other rights differently. A majority believe education, healthcare, culture and child protection are guaranteed for everyone in Spain. But 70.7% say laws are not applied equally, and 58.7% think society gets little or no benefit from the taxes people pay.

More than nine in ten want public authorities to spend more on healthcare, education and fire prevention. The survey did not include housing on that spending list.
