Mallorca housing costs: union urges general strike

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

On Mallorca, as across the Balearic Islands, having a job is no guarantee of affording food or a home, trade union CCOO warned on Wednesday, 4 November. As the tourist season ends, it says housing is far too expensive and food is getting dearer. The union is urging people to join a general strike on 11 November.

CCOO says wages are not enough to pay for food or secure a home. It argues that the Balearics’ economic and tourism model is worn out. The latest figures show jobs being created, permanent contracts remaining the main form of hiring and employment rising, according to the union. But CCOO says those gains do not change the problem: work alone is not enough to live on in the islands.
