Mallorca housing strike call puts tourism in the frame

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

On Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, campaigners are urging people to join a strike on 11 November and put tourism’s role in the housing crisis under scrutiny. In a statement issued in Palma on 6 November, the group Menys turisme, més vida says living and housing costs are central to the problem. It wants people to organise through committees in neighbourhoods and towns to help make the strike a success.

The group argues that the spread of tourism, alongside property and financial speculation, is largely behind housing problems across the Balearic Islands. It sees the strike as a way for workers to change their circumstances.

For the campaigners, the action goes beyond specific demands. They say organised communities could change the economic model. If people stopped paying rent, going to work or spending money at businesses, the group argues, the system would falter.
