In Palma, Mallorca, union leader Pedro Homar says families and young people struggle to afford a home on their wages: he says a general strike planned for 11 November is needed.

Speaking on 7 October 2026, the Balearic head of the General Union of Workers (UGT) said negotiated pay rises and a higher minimum wage still do not cover housing costs. He said the price of a home stands in the way of improving working people’s lives.

Homar blamed what he called distortions in the housing market for pushing up prices and treating homes as consumer goods rather than a basic need. UGT and Workers’ Commissions (CCOO) want to lead the wider social movement, not simply join it, he said.
