Madrid, Spain: tenants are pushing for a general strike over housing after Spain’s Congress rejected housing decrees. Valeria Racu, spokeswoman for the Madrid Tenants’ Union, said on Saturday, 3 October 2026, that the strike could happen soon. No date has been set.

The union is talking to major workers’ unions, which Racu said strongly support the idea. The organisations still need to agree when to hold a strike. Racu said they would not accept another four years without action on what she called Spain’s biggest problem, regardless of who governs.

Protesters are also continuing their camp in Madrid’s Plaza de Sol. Racu said the protest has grown beyond Maricarmen’s eviction and the tenants’ union, with camps on other squares across Spain. The Madrid camp’s assembly will decide day by day whether it stays.
