Madrid tenants push for 11 November housing strike
Madrid, Spain: a tenants’ union is pushing for a general housing strike on 11 November, aiming to draw people beyond tenant groups into the campaign. At a meeting with journalists on Thursday, 22 October, the Sindicato de Inquilinas de Madrid said it wanted the strike to challenge a system it says profits from rents. Its spokeswomen also accused government institutions of supporting that system.
The union wants housing treated as a public good rather than a commodity. It says the strike belongs to the wider public, not just tenant groups: progress on housing would not be enough, it argues, if other social movements lost ground. Public services must be part of the response too.
The union says it began planning the action more than a year ago. It now hopes to build a nationwide mobilisation with workers’ unions and social organisations, while bringing more young people and migrants into grassroots organising. It is posting updates on activities ahead of the strike at huelgaporlavivienda.org.
