Mallorca housing strike: Palma meetings start Tuesday

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Seven squares in Palma, Mallorca, are due to host neighbourhood meetings from Tuesday as campaigners prepare for a general strike over housing on 11 November. Acampada de Palma has published the plan, with a final organising meeting set for Sunday 8 November. Youth organisations Arran and SEPC have also called three open meetings for Wednesday to rally young people on Mallorca.

Seven squares, then one final meeting

Acampada de Palma has scheduled meetings through Saturday 7 November in the squares of Pere Garau, Reina Maria Cristina, Cala Moreia, París, Pius IV, Quadrado and Madrid. The final meeting will be in Palma’s Plaza de España, three days before the strike.

The group says people will discuss extensions and other legal questions, as well as ways to make housing less of a commodity and improve life in their neighbourhoods. The meetings will also help organise the strike.

Youth groups call more meetings

Arran and SEPC’s Wednesday meetings will take place at Ateneu Es 4 Cantons in Felanitx, Mallorca, the Teatre de Manacor in Manacor, Mallorca, and Ateneu Popular La Fonera. They say more meetings will follow, including one at the University of the Balearic Islands, and have invited people elsewhere to contact them about organising their own.

The groups want to build support for the strike in workplaces and places of study. They also warn against political parties and major trade unions using it for election campaigning.
