Palma's €1,581 rent: MÉS backs housing strike
Palma, Mallorca: MÉS per Palma puts average rent at €1,581 as it backs a housing strike set for 11 November. The party says even people with steady jobs cannot afford current housing prices. It announced on 26 October that it will take a motion to the next Palma City Council meeting.
Rent curbs and a buyer ban
MÉS wants Palma formally declared a housing market under pressure, a designation that would allow rents to be regulated. It is asking the city council to send that request to the Balearic regional government.
The €1,581 average rent cited in the motion is more than double the roughly €750 figure it gives for 2025. David Pujol, MÉS’s candidate for mayor, says having a job no longer guarantees that people can live in Palma. Building more homes will not be enough if people still cannot afford them, he argues.
The party also wants support for a ban on home purchases by non-residents. It proposes gradual increases in property tax and the tax on property value gains for people who own multiple properties and for homes not used as long-term residences.
Public land deal under fire
MÉS criticises the city government’s plan to make public land available to private developers for 75 years. The party says the rents proposed for homes built there would be beyond many people’s reach.
Its motion calls on public authorities to take up the demands of tenants’ unions and the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages. MÉS is urging people to join the housing strike, while asking the council to condemn attacks and insults directed at housing campaigners.
