Sánchez could call early election over housing vote
Two housing decrees face a vote in Madrid, Spain, on Friday, 2 October 2026: if they fail, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez could call an early general election. Cabinet sources told Europa Press that he is considering the move. His office says no such plan is under discussion.
An eviction puts housing at the centre of the vote
Protesters have camped at Madrid’s Puerta del Sol for almost a week after the eviction of Maricarmen, an 87-year-old woman from the Retiro district. One of the decrees includes a ban on evictions until 2030.
The PP, Vox and Junts have said they will vote against the measures. Sánchez says he will not withdraw them. His Socialist party and its coalition partner Sumar have pushed for individual votes, adding pressure on MPs to make their positions clear.
Election talk meets a denial
Sánchez has repeatedly said the next general election will be in 2027. But the cabinet sources put the chance of a change of course at “99%” if the decrees fail. If he dissolves parliament in the coming days, an election could be held on Sunday, 29 November.
The prime minister’s office at Moncloa denies considering an early election or calling a crisis meeting. Minister Ángel Víctor Torres also declined to speculate. He urged the PP, Vox, UPN and Junts at least to abstain so the housing measures can remain in force. For now, the vote comes first.
