Mallorca's IB3 cuts Catalan bar for journalists to B2

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

In Palma, Mallorca, IB3’s latest applicant list asks journalists for B2 Catalan, down from C1 in 2023: MÉS per Mallorca wants the change reversed. The party criticised the Balearic public broadcaster’s decision on 3 November 2026.

Party spokesman Lluís Apesteguia calls the lower requirement unjustifiable. Journalists work with language, he says, and a public broadcaster should set an example. MÉS per Mallorca points to two laws that give IB3 a central role in promoting Catalan.

The party wants IB3 to change the requirement and says it will raise the issue in parliament and with the broadcaster’s governing council. Apesteguia also links the decision to what he sees as a decline in IB3’s quality and independence since Josep Codony became director-general. Those are his criticisms, not consequences established by the applicant list.
