Mallorca IB3 boss rewrites report, staff hit back

IB3’s staff committee has accused the Mallorca broadcaster’s director general, Josep Cordony, of singling out news journalists and casting doubt on their judgement. On Thursday in Palma, Cordony admitted changing a report on the July human chain at es Trenc in defence of the Natural Park. The committee has demanded respect for IB3’s news professionals.

Cordony told the oversight committee for Balearic public broadcaster Radiotelevisió Illes Balears that the original report had taken a partisan approach. He said the reporter had interviewed only one side, not the other.

He said the editor and head of news then amended the item so both sides were included, adding that the head of news had his full support. Cordony also said the journalist sent to cover the story had previously been press chief for MÉS per Mallorca, making an ironic denial that IB3 was sectarian.

MÉS per Mallorca MP Marta Carrió had raised the matter in Parliament, calling it a serious attack and interference. IB3’s staff committee said all its professionals, whatever their background, work with the required rigour and deserve respect without exceptions.
