Ibiza faces 200-boat warning: Vox plan

Vox will bring a motion to Ibiza Town Council on Thursday calling for an emergency plan for a possible mass arrival of boats on the route between Algeria and the Balearic Islands. The party says the island needs the staff, equipment and procedures to cope if arrivals rise sharply. It points to a warning from Vicent Marí, president of the Island Council of Ibiza, that 100 or 200 small migrant boats arriving at once would have consequences for the island.

Vox says rising arrivals and the current pressure on island services mean authorities must prepare for an exceptional situation. The party is asking Spain’s government to strengthen the people, equipment and technology used to monitor and control the Algeria-Balearics route, with particular attention to Ibiza and Formentera.

The motion calls for Ibiza Town Council, the Island Council and other affected administrations to receive official alerts or risk assessments immediately if arrivals are expected to increase unusually.

It also asks the Government Delegation to draw up a dedicated protocol with the Balearic Government, island and town authorities, state security forces and emergency services. The plan would set out alert systems, coordination, available resources and spaces, and who is responsible for identification, onward referral, medical care, security, transport and temporary accommodation.

Vox also wants an urgent meeting of all the bodies involved to test their real capacity, identify gaps and run a planning exercise or simulation for different scenarios. It is seeking funding for the extra costs of irregular migration, especially for the system that protects minors, alongside closer cooperation with Algeria and other countries of origin or transit and action against people-smuggling networks.
