Ibiza airport discharge sparks fresh wastewater alarm

An uncontrolled discharge has been found beside Ibiza Airport, at a wall bordering the Torrent des Cirer. The Water Alliance documented the new outlet on Monday and took water samples for laboratory testing. It wants to know whether the discharge shows the same breaches previously found in the Torrent de sa Font.

Tests focus on earlier pollution findings

The group says it reported “systematic” discharges from the airport treatment plant into the Torrent de sa Font a few months ago. It says readings then reached up to 17 times the legal limit, with faecal contamination that was incompatible with watering the airport’s green areas.

That earlier complaint was registered by Seprona and passed to the Environmental and Urban Planning Prosecutor’s Office. The Water Alliance says the latest discovery points to a structural problem in the management of treated and regenerated wastewater, rather than an isolated incident. It has not ruled out water from the same reuse system.

Calls for urgent action

The airport site borders the ses Salines Natural Park, and the group says uncontrolled discharges put the area’s natural value at risk. It has called on airport operator Aena to stop any such discharge immediately and release technical data from the treatment plant.

It also wants the Directorate General for Water Resources and Seprona to act urgently. On Tuesday, the alliance will give Seprona and the prosecutor’s office the precise location of the new discharge so it can be added to the open case.
