Ibiza airport expansion: Senate hopeful says no
Ibiza, in the Balearic Islands, faces a fight over airport capacity: Senate candidate Juanjo Ferrer says he will oppose any expansion that increases it. At a press conference on Friday, 6 November, the Eivissa al Senat candidate also set out plans to tackle high housing costs and mass tourism. His proposals include rent caps and fuel taxes for private jets.
Housing and military buildings
Ferrer wants to restrict home purchases by people who do not live on Ibiza. He also proposes more social housing for rent, rules for seasonal rental contracts and caps on rents.
His programme calls for Spain’s Ministry of Defence to hand over the Héroes de Filipinas military residences in Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni, both on Ibiza, for housing and social uses.
Airport capacity and tourism
Ferrer’s coalition rejects any airport changes that would increase capacity. It also wants two different fuel taxes for private jets, depending on whether they are used for work or personal travel.
To tackle mass tourism, Ferrer proposes removing illegal holiday accommodation and stopping the creation of new tourist places. He also wants to work with Spain’s central government on other kinds of tourism to make the sector less seasonal.
Tax and social support
Ferrer proposes a lower rate of value added tax for the Balearic Islands to offset the disadvantages of island life. He also wants shorter waits for care support and better unemployment cover for workers on recurring seasonal contracts. For now, these are the Senate candidate’s proposals.
