Ibiza airport expansion protest called for Sunday

A protest against expanding Ibiza Airport is planned for Sunday after Ara Eivissa urged people across the island to join the demonstration.

The party says the works would lock Ibiza into a model of ever-rising tourist numbers. It argues that this approach has gone beyond its limits, worsening overcrowding, the shortage of housing, falling competitiveness and the lack of prospects for many young people.

Ara Eivissa said the original call for the protest came from the Associació de Joves d'Eivissa, describing that as an important sign.

The party also accused airport operator Aena of pursuing greater profits and said this was the only way to explain its push for more passenger capacity. It warned that Ibiza's future should not be shaped by the interests of a company which, despite being mostly publicly owned, serves private shareholders.

Ara Eivissa is calling for shared management of the airport from Ibiza, which it sees as a first step towards real control over the island's main gateway for visitors. It also criticised island institutions, saying they oppose the expansion but have not made their voices heard strongly enough in the oversight bodies considering the DORA III plan.
