Ibiza airport overhaul: director called to Parliament

In Palma, Mallorca, Parliament has unanimously backed a call for Ibiza Airport director Marta Torres to explain the planned overhaul. The decision came on Wednesday, 23 September, after concerns over differences between public information and documents from airport operator Aena. Torres is to appear before the chamber’s committee for territorial planning, housing, mobility, the sea and the water cycle.

The request was put forward by the Mixed Group.

The same committee also approved a motion urging the Balearic Government to build a regional strategy against forest fires. It calls for prevention, active management of the land and closer coordination between public bodies.

The plan asks for more work in lower-risk months, including forest clearing, upkeep of firebreaks and forest tracks, and improved water points for firefighting. It also calls for a gradual increase in staff, equipment and technology for prevention and firefighting.

The motion backs traditional measures too, including extensive livestock grazing, clearing undergrowth and collecting firewood. It also seeks stronger cooperation between public authorities, the primary sector, professional bodies and research centres. Eight PP and Vox deputies voted in favour, while six representatives of PSIB, MÉS per Mallorca and Més per Menorca voted against.

A separate proposal on housing refurbishment failed. Més per Menorca deputy Josep Castells had sought a dedicated aid scheme for home renovations and removing architectural barriers in the next regional budget proposal. PSIB, MÉS per Mallorca and Més per Menorca supported it; PP and Vox opposed it.
