Ibiza airport expansion protest crosses Eivissa on 20 September
On Sunday 20 September at 18.00, a protest against the planned expansion of Ibiza Airport will set off from Vara de Rey in Eivissa. The march, called by the Asociación de Jóvenes de Eivissa (AJE), will pass through the town’s main streets and finish at the Consell Insular. There, the association plans to read a manifesto.
Gates, VIP lounge and non-Schengen area
AJE is opposing plans by airport operator Aena to add more boarding gates as part of the airport reform. It also rejects a larger VIP lounge and a dedicated area for non-Schengen flights.
The association says the changes would put greater pressure on the island and essential public services including healthcare, mobility and water resources. It says the expansion would also worsen the wellbeing of residents and workers.
AJE alleges sewage discharge
AJE has also accused Aena of illegally discharging sewage into ses Salines Natural Park. The association is calling for a more balanced, jointly agreed approach to tourism to tackle overcrowding and the problems linked to it.
It has urged people to join the march, saying Eivissa needs support now more than ever.
