Ibiza airport protest: PSOE calls for growth limits

A protest against expanding Ibiza Airport has sharpened calls to curb the island’s growth. The Socialist Federation of Ibiza (FSE-PSOE) said Sunday’s demonstration sent a clear message that limits are needed. It says airport works must not become a route to handling more travellers and adding to tourism pressure.

The party says Ibiza needs a safe, accessible and efficient airport with facilities suited to the island’s needs. But it argues that every decision on Ibiza’s future must take account of its physical and environmental limits.

The FSE-PSOE also called on Ibiza’s institutions to act within their powers to contain pressure on the land and protect decent living conditions for residents. It accused the Island Council of Ibiza, the Consell, of pursuing further growth and overcrowding, saying it has spent more than €50 million on tourism promotion.

The party said a tourism planning document remains unseen. It also attacked the lifting of the moratorium on tourist places, an urban-planning amnesty for mansions and illegal building works in protected areas, and a change to the island’s PTI territorial plan, which it says will have “disastrous consequences” in the years ahead.

It further rejected the People’s Party’s proposal for a fourth desalination plant and plans to leave housing construction on rural land to private developers.
