Ibiza Airport upgrade: Vox rejects PSOE-PP row
Vox is backing an upgrade of Ibiza Airport but says it will not join the political row between PSOE and PP over Aena’s project. Jaime Díaz de Entresotos, a Vox member of the Consell d’Eivissa, said the investment should go ahead only if it meets the needs of island residents and Ibiza’s economy. He made the statement on Monday, 21 September.
Díaz de Entresotos said Ibiza needs an airport that is modern, safe and suited to current needs. Turning every airport investment into a party-political battle, he argued, does not help the debate.
Vox said Aena has maintained that the planned work would not automatically bring more tourists to Eivissa. Díaz de Entresotos also rejected a direct link between airport capacity and tourism growth, saying visitor numbers depend mainly on accommodation capacity. Measures have already been approved to reduce that capacity, he said.
The party said people and organisations are entitled to oppose the project. But it rejected attempts to turn the airport debate into an argument about identity, including links to the imposition of Catalan or the protection of lizards.
Vox also repeated its opposition to joint airport management. It says strategic responsibilities should not be split up and that Spain’s airport network must be planned nationally rather than divided into regional powers.
