Ibiza buses carry 4.9m passengers in five months

Ibiza’s buses have carried 4.9 million passengers since the new service began on 1 April. That is one million more journeys than in the same five months of 2025, a rise of 26.4%, according to figures released by the Island Council. Alsa, the island’s public transport operator, says August brought the sharpest surge, with 1.25 million users.

August passenger numbers were 40.2% higher than a year earlier. Growth had already gathered pace through the summer: 2.4% in April, 15.3% in May, 27.3% in June and 36.5% in July.

More drivers and rooms for the busiest months

Alsa says it has brought in 220 new drivers to meet the higher demand. They include staff transferred from mainland Spain, new recruits and workers taken on from other companies.

The operator says it needs 350 drivers on Ibiza in the months of greatest demand, 50 more than the 300 set out in its contract. It has arranged 270 rooms across 90 properties for operational and travelling staff.

Alsa now employs 390 people on Ibiza, including drivers, workshop workers and office staff. Some 63% are new hires. The company has also recruited 36 information staff for key points including the airport and ferry terminal, and says it has put more than €500,000 into technical training for 220 new staff.

Electric buses expand the fleet

Seventy new buses have entered service on Ibiza: 34 zero-emission electric vehicles and 36 Euro VI hybrid buses. Alsa says the electric buses prevented 505.7 tonnes of CO2 emissions during their first four months in operation.

Another 30 electric buses are due in the coming months. That would take the new fleet to 100 vehicles, with 64% electrified.
