Ibiza election: Socialists attack PP over housing

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Ibiza, in the Balearic Islands, faces a 29 November election with housing at the centre of a political fight: the island’s Socialists accuse the conservative People’s Party (PP) of failing to use available measures and rejecting two housing decrees in Congress. Vicent Roselló, leader of the Ibiza Socialist Federation, made the criticism on 5 October and said the right to housing would be a major issue at the vote.

Roselló says housing is a right recognised by the Spanish constitution, but accuses the PP of treating it as a business. Socialist member of Congress Milena Herrera argues that a broad progressive majority is needed to pass the decrees and further housing measures for Ibiza and the Balearic Islands.

Roselló also points to changes made during the current parliamentary term: a constitutional amendment to give Formentera a senator, an island allowance brought into line with the Canary Islands’ allowance, and higher pensions. His party casts the coming election as a choice over rights and the direction of the country.
