Ibiza ferry: almost one and a half tonnes of cocaine
Almost one and a half tonnes of cocaine: customs officers find the drugs in a vehicle off a ferry from the Balearic island of Ibiza at the Port of Valencia in mainland Spain on Friday, 2 October, and arrest its driver.
The officers, from the Customs Surveillance Service of Spain’s Tax Agency, are checking vehicles as they leave the ferry. Their X-ray scanning van, called Medusa, shows two kinds of cargo in one vehicle’s load space. Behind a screen beside the cargo door, they find a large number of bundles. A drug test confirms cocaine.
Officers take the driver, who is from Romania, the vehicle and the drugs to Customs Surveillance Service premises. They count 1,420 slabs of cocaine. The case papers have since gone to the Investigation Section of Valencia’s Court of Instance.
The seizure comes during a routine check of ferries linking mainland Spain with the Balearic Islands. The Port of Valencia has three terminals with connections to the islands.
