On Ibiza in the Balearic Islands, fishing huts could gain protection under a proposed coastal law. At a forum in Eivissa, Ibiza, on 6 November, Juan Manuel Lafuente, the Balearic minister for the sea and water cycle, outlined plans to identify and protect traditional buildings along the shore. These include fishing huts, boat slipways and other structures long linked to the sea.

Lafuente also pointed to old boarding points and small fishing facilities on Ibiza and Formentera. What happens to each site depends on its heritage and local circumstances, legal status and the rules for using public coastal land, according to the Balearic government.

The bill also sets out how the Balearic government, island councils and town councils would share responsibility for the coast. It covers beach services, activities along the shore, conservation of natural spaces and public use of the coast. For now, it remains a proposal, not a law in force.
