Ibiza boosts flood defences a year after storm

Eivissa on Ibiza gives rainwater a wider route to the sea: the city has enlarged a channel that restricted drainage during heavy rain. On Wednesday, 30 September, its council set out the work completed since a severe storm struck the island a year ago. It has also approved a municipal emergency plan and added equipment for emergency teams.

More room for rainwater

At Ses Feixes, the council widened the channel where a narrow section had held back water heading towards the sea. On Camí de Can Murtera, new perforated covers let more rainwater enter the drainage network.

The city has also cleared and widened parts of the Sa Llavanera stream’s route and installed larger street drains nearby. In Platja d’en Bossa, a stormwater tank on Fray Luis de León street is operating. It is designed to hold water during heavy rain, easing pressure on the drainage network and reducing flood risk.

Equipment ready for emergencies

Civil Protection and Local Police have new vehicles and equipment, including pumps, generators and protective gear. The council says these resources are available 24 hours a day. Its main contractors have also set aside vehicles and machinery for emergencies.

On Wednesday, the city rehearsed activating the leadership committee for its municipal emergency plan. It now intends to align its procedures with the regional education and health departments, so people do not receive conflicting instructions about access to and evacuation from schools and healthcare facilities during an emergency.
