Ibiza floods shut three roads; Mallorca at risk

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Three roads are closed in the sa Cala area of northern Ibiza as heavy rain floods stretches of road on Monday, 19 October. Torrents have burst their banks around Santa Eulària and Sant Joan on Ibiza. Pablo Gárriz, the Balearic government's director-general for emergencies, says Mallorca could also be affected.

The Balearic emergency service sent a new ES-Alert warning at 10.03am. The rain is much more intense than expected, Gárriz says. An orange alert for Ibiza and Formentera is due to remain in force until 6pm for now.

Gárriz urges people to avoid journeys, especially in the worst-hit areas, and not to try to cross torrents. He says the way previous weather episodes developed means he cannot rule out the storm reaching Mallorca.
